When my youngest daughter was a one-year-old, my husband and I separated, and I became single mother. I had four children altogether (the oldest was eight), a home (which wasn’t in very good shape) and $300 of income a month, so I learned to trust God for everything.
There were so many ways God took care of us in those years, and I have so many stories of protection and healing and provision, but there is one time he provided for us I really like to talk about.
Because I couldn’t work when my children were that young, it was a real struggle to make ends meet. And I remember one time after paying some bills, the money was just not there for food. One particular night my children were so hungry, and we had nothing to eat in the house. But the words to an old spiritual, “All of God’s children got shoes” kept coming up in me, and I just knew that somehow, God was going to take care of us.
Then I was reminded of a story about missionaries once who didn’t have any food, but when they set their table and prayed, God provided for them. I decided that’s what we were going to do!
So I told the children to go set the table. We put the plates out and the cups and silverware, and then we all sat down. Then we thanked God for our food and said we appreciated that he was going to provide for us. But nothing happened right away, and everyone kind of drifted away from the table and kept themselves busy while we waited.
About 45 minutes later, there was a knock on the door. When I opened it, there was my neighbor, Mrs. Rodriguez, and her arms were full of food, all hot and ready to eat! There were enchiladas, refried beans, rice, tostadas, and even desert! She had no idea that we were hungry. She had just brought the food by as a surprise. But we knew God had supernaturally put it on Mrs. Rodriguez’s heart to bring us food that night.
My children’s mouths dropped open when they saw the food! They were so excited. Not only did a feast show up on the doorstep, they got to see how real God was and that he could provide for us at a time when we really needed it. As soon as she left, we put everything down on the table and ate that delicious meal, thanking God and eating our fill!
